Here you can also witness the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, old frescoes, and a variety of other icons. All dating back to the 14th century.
Lassithi Plateau is our next destination. It is 850m above the sea level. The plateau is surrounded by the Dikti Mountains and 18 quaint villages. It still retains the atmosphere of another era.
You can admire the remaining famous wind mills, the Venetian ditches and the drainage system of the plateau. The most famous village in the Lassithi Plateau is the village of Psychro. In this traditional village, we pay a short free visit to a traditional potter’s workshop. This ancient ceramic art is today more than 8000 years. You will be able to watch the potters making masterpieces in just a few minutes. You might have the chance to try it also.
The Cave of Zeus
Then we will visit the Dikteon Cave, the longest in Crete. The Cave of Zeus is a famous spot in Crete. It’s a big cave on the Mount Ida, where, according to legend, Zeus, the king of the gods in Greek mythology, was born. Many people visit this cave every year to see where Zeus might have lived as a baby. Inside the cave, you can see impressive rock formations and feel the cool air.
In the lovely village of Tzermiado, you can enjoy the natural beauty, the breath taking views, and the traditional architecture. You can take pictures of the wonderful landscape, rest for a while. If you wish you may also enjoy a lunch in one of the local taverns.
