Places of Interest in Crete

The following places of interest in Crete are included in at least one of our tours:

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, full of beautiful landscapes, ancient history, and rich culture. Heraklion, the capital, is home to the famous Palace of Knossos, an important archaeological site with colorful frescoes and a famous labyrinth. To the west, Chania has a charming Venetian Old Town with narrow streets leading to a busy harbor, guarded by the strong Fortezza fortress. Rethymnon is known for its lovely Old Town and a historic fortress, while Ierapetra, in the south, has a relaxed coastal vibe.

Nature lovers can enjoy the Samaria Gorge, one of the longest in Europe, with hiking trails through stunning landscapes. Elafonisi Beach, in the southwest, is known for its pink sand and clear waters, perfect for beach lovers. Balos and Gramvousa, in the northwest, offer beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters, reachable by boat or a hike. For a taste of traditional Cretan life, visit the mountain villages of Anogeia and Archanes, each with its own unique charm.

Crete’s history is also rich. Arkadi Monastery is a symbol of resistance during the Ottoman era. The ancient city of Gortyna has well-preserved Roman ruins. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion displays many artifacts from Crete’s long history. For a spiritual experience, visit Agios Nikolaos, a town built around a pretty lake, or Spinalonga, a small island with a history as a leper colony.
